CNU Power: Strength and Conditioning @ Christopher Newport University

CNU Strength and Conditioning - our philosophy

With commitment and dedication, Christopher Newport University’s strength and conditioning staff places high priority and emphasis on supporting the university’s mission, philosophy, and goals for outstanding academic achievement. As we work with our student athletes, a high value and importance is placed on the word student. Therefore, the strength and conditioning staff stresses providing opportunities for students to enhance their academic achievement by teaching life skills such as mental and physical discipline, goal setting, teamwork, and problem solving.

We recognize that academic achievement is a year round commitment that incorporates both preparation and active learning experiences outside of the classroom. Paralleled with academics is the athletes’ off- the-field preparation for athletic competition and you find the foundation and major component of our regionally and nationally recognized athletic programs and athletes. A key contributing factor to the enhanced performance of our athletes is the strength and conditioning staff. Our staff works closely with each sport’s coaching staff to develop an individualized, sport-specific, year round program, that prepares student athletes to perform at their optimal level in their particular sport.

Additionally, the program’s commitment is extended to capitalize on athletic potential while reducing the risk of injury. Building on the foundation of injury free participation, as well as the athlete’s strengths and weaknesses, the student-athletes training focuses on proper lifting, effective warm ups, speed, power, agility, quickness, metabolic conditioning, and motivation.
